    About Japanese encephalitis

    Japanese encephalitis is a viral brain inflammation transmitted by mosquitoes. Most infections are mild, but in severe cases the disease can lead to permanent brain damage or death.

    How is it transmitted?

    The virus is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, which are most active in the evening and at night. Pigs and water birds are the main hosts. The risk is highest in rural areas with rice fields.

    Confusion
    Tremors and spasms

    • Permanent brain damage (30-50% of severe cases)
