Why Meningococcal ACWY is required
During Hajj and Umrah, millions of pilgrims from around the world gather in a relatively small area. These unique circumstances, with intense physical contact, shared accommodations and long periods in crowds, create an ideal environment for the spread of meningococcal bacteria.
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicemia. The disease can develop rapidly and be fatal within 24 hours. In the past, outbreaks during Hajj have led to worldwide spread of dangerous meningococcal strains when pilgrims returned to their home countries.
For this reason, Saudi Arabia has made the Meningococcal ACWY vaccination mandatory for all pilgrims. The vaccine protects against the four most common disease-causing types (A, C, W and Y). Your vaccination certificate must be at least 10 days old upon arrival and must not be older than 5 years.
Note: for Hajj, vaccination is always required. For Umrah, the requirement applies when traveling with an Umrah visa. With a tourist visa it is not required, but strongly recommended.
Recommended vaccinations: Hepatitis A and DTP
In addition to the mandatory Meningococcal ACWY vaccination, we also recommend Hepatitis A and a DTP booster for pilgrims.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a liver inflammation transmitted through contaminated food or water. During Hajj, you may eat in places where hygiene is not always optimal. The vaccine provides long-term protection and is therefore strongly recommended.
DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
The DTP vaccination protects against three serious infectious diseases. In the Netherlands, everyone is vaccinated as a child, but protection decreases over time. A booster is recommended if your last vaccination was more than 10 years ago.
Why during Hajj? Why during Hajj? Diphtheria spreads through coughing and sneezing in crowded gatherings. Tetanus can be contracted through small wounds, for example blisters on your feet during the long walking distances. Polio still occurs in some countries from which pilgrims come and spreads through contaminated water or food.
