The Day of Arafah
The 9th day of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah, is the culmination of Hajj. On this day, all pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafah, about 20 kilometers east of Mecca. Standing on Arafah (Wuquf) is the most important obligation of Hajj; without this act, the pilgrimage is not valid.
Pilgrims spend the day in prayer, supplication and asking for forgiveness. It is a day of great spiritual significance, during which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered his farewell sermon.
For Muslims who are not on Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah is a recommended act that can expiate the sins of the previous and coming year.
