Vaccinations for the United States
Applying for a visa, studying at a US university or going to work in the States? The United States asks for a documented vaccination record. We help you get it complete and in order.
Unlike most holiday destinations, the United States links certain vaccinations to your application procedure. For an immigrant visa they are part of the mandatory medical examination, and universities require a completed immunization form before you can enrol. For an ordinary tourist trip there are no mandatory vaccinations — but having your basic protection up to date is still wise.
Immigrant visa / green card
Applicants for an immigrant visa undergo a medical examination in which the vaccination record is checked against the requirements set by the US authorities. In practice these are:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio) — including pertussis where applicable
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) — usually 2 doses
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- Hepatitis A and hepatitis B
- Influenza (flu) — during flu season
- Pneumococcal and meningococcal — depending on age
- COVID-19 — according to the policy in force at that time
The final assessment is always made by the designated physician (panel physician or civil surgeon). Requirements can change; always check the current list for your application.
Studying in the USA
Almost every American university requires a completed immunization form before enrolment or before you may move into campus housing. Each university uses its own form, but the requested vaccinations are largely the same:
- MMR — almost always 2 documented doses required
- DTP / Tdap — often a booster within the last 10 years
- Varicella (chickenpox) — vaccination or proven past infection
- Hepatitis B — full series
- Meningococcal ACWY — often mandatory for campus housing
- Tuberculosis screening (TB test) — commonly requested for international students

Work, J-1, au pair and regular travel
For exchange programmes, internships and au pair placements the host organisation often applies the same requirements as universities. For a regular holiday or business trip there are no mandatory vaccinations: make sure your basic protection (DTP, MMR) is up to date, and consider hepatitis A for longer stays or extensive road trips.

Practical: plan in time
- Start at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure or before the enrolment deadline
- Several vaccinations require multiple doses with a fixed interval
- Bring your vaccination booklet or any earlier vaccination records
- Bring the university form or visa requirements
