Hajj for older pilgrims
A large share of Dutch pilgrims are over sixty. Hajj is entirely feasible then, but it calls for an honest assessment of what your body can handle and for arranging assistance before you leave.

Short answer
Older pilgrims can complete Hajj well with fitness building in the preceding months, assistance with transport and rites where permitted, and attention to heat and medication. Influenza and pneumococcal vaccination matter especially, alongside the required ACWY.
Planning your vaccination
- Meningococcal ACWY, required for Saudi Arabia
- International vaccination certificate straight away
- Evening and weekend appointments, every day 10:00 to 22:00
Build up your fitness
- Start walking daily three to six months before departure
- Work towards at least five to eight kilometres a day, in the clothing and footwear you will bring
- Practise climbing stairs and standing for long periods
- Break in your sandals at home to prevent blisters
Assistance you can arrange
- Wheelchair or electric cart for the tawaf and the sa'i
- Airport assistance, requested through the airline
- A package with accommodation close to the Haram, so you walk less
- Travel with a companion or family member who knows your situation
Rites that may be adjusted
For those who cannot manage physically, options exist within fiqh, such as having someone else perform the stoning or completing the tawaf while being wheeled. Which adjustment is permitted in your case is a question for your own religious guidance or your travel group.
Vaccinations that matter most
- Meningococcal ACWY: required for entry, at least ten days before arrival
- Influenza: strongly recommended, especially over sixty and with heart or lung complaints
- Pneumococcal: discuss whether this makes sense in your situation
- Hepatitis A and a DTP booster: a standard part of the travel advice
Information about registration and packages is based on the official Nusuk Hajj platform of the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Registration and payment take place there only; DKliniek provides the medical preparation.
