About Meningococcal disease
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium. The disease can manifest as meningitis or blood poisoning (sepsis). Without treatment, the disease is often fatal, and even with treatment, permanent damage can occur.
How is it transmitted?
The bacteria spreads through droplets from the nose and throat when coughing, sneezing or close contact. The risk of transmission is especially high in large crowds such as during Hajj.
