    Ghana is the 'Gold Coast', with a rich history linked to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Cape Coast and Elmina have imposing slave forts, now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The country is stable and welcoming, with colourful markets, traditional festivals and Ashanti culture. The coast offers good surfing.

    Health risks

    Yellow Fever - Required (GV)

    When to start vaccinating?

    Plan your vaccinations ideally 6-8 weeks before departure. Some vaccinations require multiple doses for full protection. For yellow fever, you must be vaccinated at least 10 days before arrival.

    Best time to travel

    November to March is driest. April to October brings the most rain, with a short break in August.

    Malaria

    There is a high malaria risk throughout Ghana all year. Malaria prophylaxis is always advised, including for short trips and family visits.

    Our advice in short

    • Yellow fever is mandatory for all travellers from nine months of age; without a valid certificate you can be refused entry.
    • Hepatitis A, DTP and typhoid are standard; hepatitis B for longer stays or family visits.
    • Meningococcal ACWY is relevant in the dry season when staying in the north.
    • For visits to friends and relatives the risk of malaria and hepatitis A is higher than for a hotel stay - come well in advance.

    I am visiting family - do I need everything too?

    For family visits the advice is in fact broader: you stay closer to the local population, share meals and spend more time outdoors. Yellow fever is mandatory and antimalarials are strongly recommended.
