Plan your vaccinations ideally 6-8 weeks before departure. Some vaccinations require multiple doses for full protection. For yellow fever, you must be vaccinated at least 10 days before arrival.

Practical travel information for Peru
Best time to travel
May to September is the dry season in the Andes and the best time for Machu Picchu. The Amazon is warm and humid year-round.
Malaria
In the Amazon region (including Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado) malaria prophylaxis is usually advised. There is no malaria risk in Lima, Cusco or Machu Picchu.
Our advice in short
- Yellow fever is advised when visiting the Amazon region below 2,300 metres; it is not needed for Lima, Cusco or Machu Picchu.
- Hepatitis A, DTP and typhoid are the standard recommendations for a touring trip.
- Altitude sickness is a real risk in Cusco (3,400 m); plan acclimatisation days and discuss possible medication during the consultation.
- Rabies for longer stays, jungle treks and frequent animal contact.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need yellow fever for Machu Picchu?
No. Machu Picchu and Cusco lie high enough to fall outside the yellow fever area. If you combine the trip with the Amazon, we do advise the vaccination.
