About Rabies
Rabies is a fatal viral infection of the nervous system. Without treatment, the disease is 100% fatal. Approximately 59,000 people worldwide die from rabies each year, mainly in Asia and Africa.
How is it transmitted?
Through saliva of infected mammals, usually through a bite or scratch. Stray dogs are the main source, but cats, bats, monkeys and other animals can also carry the virus.

How does it work?
The vaccine contains killed rabies viruses that train your immune system. After a bite post-vaccination, you have a head start and fewer doses are needed.

How many rabies doses are needed?
Before travel you usually receive two doses one week apart. After a bite, additional treatment is always still needed, but simpler and without immunoglobulin.
How long does rabies vaccination last?
After a complete pre-exposure series, immune memory lasts a very long time. Routine boosters are not needed for most travellers.
What should you do after an animal bite or scratch?
Rinse the wound with water and soap for at least fifteen minutes and seek medical help locally as soon as possible. Rabies cannot be treated once symptoms appear.
